Payet and Lanzini together
I have become concerned about the Payet/Lanzini partnership. Firstly it has produced very little this season, in fact I would go as far as saying that a goal has not been scored by their tippy/tappy football. The consequences of them playing amongst themselves is costing us other opportunities and is bloody frustrating.

Neither of the fight back for a lost ball and neither really challenge when an opposition player in on the ball. Are they both a luxury and can we afford this luxury?

One of them maybe but the two of them mean we are often carrying them with a negative impact on the rest of the team.

Your thoughts please?

Throw Cresswell into that mix and we have a thumping threesome who can tear a hole in any defence

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
I agree it's not as productive this year, but their understanding and combination play is about the best we have going for us in the attack apart from hopeful set-pieces which seems to be our primary method of scoring. The bigger issue for me is that when they create space with their combination passing, there is no where to go up top because with the exception of sakho and to a lesser extent carroll, our forwards have been fucking terrible at creating space or holding up play. The two games that sakho started we played the best football all season against tottenham away and man u away. without a 3rd competent attacker (or one who combines well with them), their pairing is far less effective. coincidentally, we do less defending when they are more effective too.

I'd give them loads of time. It's the defensive set up that needs to be sorted. Of course, both Payet and Lanzini have defensive responsibilities too, on which Payet in particular has been working hard and well on the last couple of matches and Lanzini usually does, but they only need help a little in defence; it has to be the defence and midfield that sort their act out, giving the like of Payet and Lanzini more freedom to express themselves up front.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
I prefer us with both of these playing at the same time. If we can get our swagger back, they can take apart any team, but they need everyone to play to their potential, or we fall apart behind them.

Watford at home, up until Watford scored their first, showed how good they can be together when the other attackers are clicking too. We haven't yet recovered from that trauma of blowing our 2-0 lead to lose 4-2.

Good thread as it's not working that's for sure

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
Lanzini is pure class but has had to make allowances playing wider due to Bilic's preference of playing 3-4-3 this season last year he was in the central role of the the three that played behind the striker and had much more influence on the game

I'd be more concerned with us paying £20 million for Ayew who doesn't seem to have a position in the team

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
I believe for this pairing to work it takes a team around them to make them tick and do their thing, its all about movement and being on top of the opposition, although I saw payet being slightly selfish a few times last night.
They are two brilliant players who are both creative and clever but they are only truly good if West ham boss games.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
Fine for me, bear in mind they have had poor demotivated players around them for quite some time.

Payet is pure class and Lanzini a fantastic worker with loads of skill and pace to compliment him, it will come together again soon.

I think moving Payet from the left to central and Lanzini to replace him will make us better.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
No problem at all.

Noble needs to be dropped and Lanzini can play around Obiang.

Well the issue is whether that time arrives before we drop down a division. So it is a pressing concern I'd say.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
Why is this even a discussion? Leave them alone for fucks sake. They're a joy to watch together and only a matter of time before their class tells. Tough to play against a bunch of cloggers last night. And Bilic, stop taking Lanzini off!

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
I feel they often get too close to each other and it can get very predictable and congested in the middle. But to be fair to Lanzini he's playing different roles in the team week to week it seems, so it must be hard to work out a consistent pattern.

Our 2 most talented players ,the coaching staff should be working on the best formation to use those talents
If the other players around them have to do more graft to suit it so what ?

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
The ball bypasses them for large periods of the game. We can't pass the ball out from the back. Pass back to a centre back or keeper and hoof, lose the ball, have to win it back and then repeat.

These guys can only be effective if they are given the ball in good areas and have movement around them to give and go. We don't have any movement in the team as we are scared of being countered on. This often means they have to hold onto the ball too long and lose it. At some point we are going to have to take some risks when we attack and not just when we are 2 goals down and making silly subs.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
Banjo, I think you need to look a little deeper.

Midfield "tippy tappy" play, which quite clearly gets the ball forward in a very effective and beautiful manner, needs to reach a point where a player can work a shot. Either from 20 or 2 yards. The problem is, there is nobody they can set up. Andy Carroll was brilliant last night, but really doesn't suit us given the quality of our other players. Every time we went forward last night he dropped deep or went to hang up at the far post. He isn't capable of hitting a shot on target from tight areas, nor can he receive it and set it for an on coming midfielder.

Creswell, Lanzini and Payet are not the problem.
It's not having a striker.

Sven Roeder 11:42 Thu Dec 15
Re: Payet and Lanzini together
The two of them pass together well but they need a quick alert striker to play in at the end of it.
Which is why we need SAHKO back ASAP.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
banjo.
Agree, the tippy tappy stuff was not working last night, with two many players to snuff it out, When a long ball to someone in space would have done, Asenal are good at it, but we are not at this point in time, Looks good over the local park though.

Sniper 11:35 Thu Dec 15
Re: Payet and Lanzini together
Inthrink we have to go for slower passing at the new stadium as the pitch is bigger - Upton Park was small and you could go full pelt for longer.

It was frustrating at times last night though - payet and lanzini had to drop really deep to get the ball and we spent too long playing across the back three often with little movement ahead.

good post. we'd be much better off with a pair of cloggers in midfield. fucking showboating cunts
